Built to solve real problems in Nigerian universities

Attenova was born out of frustration with how campus life is still managed in most universities — paper attendance sheets, roll calls that eat into lecture time, hostel bed-checks done on clipboards, permission slips passed by hand, and a proxy attendance problem that nobody had a real solution for.

We built one platform that covers all of it. Students check in to class with GPS and face verification in under 30 seconds. Hostel managers run bed-checks and see who's in and who's out in real time. Chapel and campus events get the same attendance tracking as lectures. Permission requests move from paper to a dashboard everyone can see. Lecturers, hostel managers, and administrators each get a live view of exactly what they're responsible for.

Then we went a step further. Knowing who was in class isn’t the same as knowing who understood it — so we brought ClassPulse, our live class engagement tool, into Attenova. Lecturers now run quick quizzes, polls and anonymous Q&A in the same app, with AI that writes the questions from their own notes, and see after every class which students and topics need more help.

GPS + FACE VERIFICATION

How Attenova stops proxy attendance

A friend can’t mark for you, and you can’t mark from your hostel. Every check-in has to pass several independent checks at once — and every mark is recorded with its time, location and GPS accuracy, so lecturers can see exactly how it was made.

The student’s location is checked on our server against the classroom’s position. Outside the radius the lecturer set, the check-in is rejected.

Face verification

The student’s face is matched against the face they enrolled — on the phone itself, so their photo never has to leave the device.

Liveness check

A quick random action — blink, smile or turn your head — so a printed photo or a recorded video can’t pass as the student.

Fake-GPS detection

Location-spoofing apps are detected and the check-in is refused.

Codes that expire

Each class has its own code or QR code, accepted only while the attendance window is open — sharing it after class does nothing.

Left-early detection

A student who marks and then walks out of the classroom area is flagged to the lecturer.

Google Maps API

GPS coordinates are verified server-side using the Haversine formula. Outdoor accuracy is 5–10 metres; indoor accuracy is 10–50 metres depending on building structure.

Cloud Infrastructure

Hosted on AWS/Google Cloud with auto-scaling during peak hours (8–10 AM). Handles 5,000+ concurrent users with 99.9% uptime and daily automated backups.

Security & Privacy

All data is SSL/TLS encrypted in transit. Passwords are bcrypt-hashed, admin sign-in needs a one-time email code, and backups are encrypted. Student data is never shared with third parties.

Cost to universities — ever

No. Even if a student has the session code, they must be physically within the GPS radius set by the lecturer (typically 50–200 metres around the classroom). If their GPS coordinates don't match, the system rejects the attempt.

Attenova is available as an Android app on Google Play and as a web app that works in any modern phone browser, including on iPhone (a dedicated iPhone app is coming soon). It uses the phone's GPS and camera for location and face verification, so a smartphone will be needed to check in. A student without one will still be able to mark attendance by briefly borrowing a phone — check-in isn't tied to owning a specific device, just to being signed into your own account on it.

Typically 3 weeks. Week 1 covers account setup and database import. Week 2 is training — for lecturers, students, and admins. Week 3 the system goes live with on-site support available.

No. Class attendance is where it started, but the same platform now covers hostel bed-checks, chapel and event attendance, and student permission requests — with dedicated dashboards for hostel managers alongside students, lecturers, and admins. With ClassPulse it also runs live class quizzes, polls and anonymous Q&A.
